Amnesty International Malaysia today announced Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, as a participant of of the campaign that will see thousands of activists raising awareness of others who are persecuted by their governments.
AI Malaysia executive director Shahmini Darshni said Zunar was chosen because of the nine sedition charges that he was currently facing, for tweeting critically of the Malaysian judiciary.
Meanwhile, the need for campaigns such as the one featured above is validated by the persecution of cartoonists like Thailand’s Sakda Sae Iao.
The Thai authorities briefly detained the prominent editorial cartoonist on Sunday 4th October and warned he could be prosecuted for his future work, according to local news reports.
Sakda Sae Iao works for the local language Thai Rath newspaper and is better known by his pen name “Sia”. It is the second time since the military seized power in a May 2014 coup that Sakda has been summoned for what the junta refers to as “attitude adjustment”.
