After leaving college where his flat mate was the actor Peter Postlethwaite, Paul decided not to go to the Young Vic with Peter; take the secure option and graduated as a teacher! He then spent several years as a secondary year teacher and part time children’s broadcaster on Radio London where he worked and acted with such names as Kenneth Williams, Galton and Simson, Charlie Drake, Ron Moody, Jon Pertwee and even Pan’s People! He later joined the Channel Four Racing Morning Line team shortly after it first went on air and drew the Picture Puzzle every Saturday and festival day since that time for over fourteen years.
Paul is a member of the British Cartoonists’ Association, the Cartoonists’ Club of Great Britain, the Professional Cartoonists’ Organisation and the Federation of Cartoonists’ Organisations.
His work has appeared in most of the National Press publications and in many magazines and periodicals. For several years he worked as editorial sports cartoonist for the Daily and Sunday Mirrors and occasionally for the Sporting Life.
Internationally he has been awarded prizes in several European competitions and is well known for his layout and storyboard work for many films and commercials. With knowledge of camera and editing, Paul specialised in shooting boards; working closely with a director to achieve speed boarding used during a shoot. This type of boarding has been used to effect on a considerable number of British commercials and short films.
His work has taken him to Hollywood where he worked on background design, character design, layout and creative story boarding on the film, Space Jam, starring Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny. As a background designer and layout supervisor he has worked on a number of children’s animated cartoon series for CITV including Little Ghosts, Preston Pig, Pong Whiffy, Ivor the Invisible and much more for overseas markets. Storybook layout and design has included work for Disney and Warner as well as his illustration for the Rugrats, Koala Brothers and Ninja Turtles and a National Geographic children’s series.
He has recently written and illustrated a commissioned book Draw Animation for New Holland Publishers and is illustrating many international children’s textbooks for Oxford University Press, Macmillan Publishing, Penguin and Heinemann, whilst having his own children’s story, at present, in development.
