The New Cartoonist is now onto its fourth issue. Editor, Cartoonist and man about town Pete Songi introduces you to the latest instalment:
In this issue we have the editorial cartoon heavyweight, writer, poet and performer Martin Rowson on the front cover. I caught up with Rowson in his studio at home in South East London, so make sure you watch the video as well as reading the interview. (Some viewers might be affected by the sweary content.Lucky them!). We also have the fabulous Sonia Sodha in ‘Politically Speaking’ and a piece on the enjoyable afternoon I spent at The Ralph Steadman exhibition in sunny Pinner. The winners of the Young Cartoonist of The Year were announced in March and the TNC was there at the Cartoon Museum to capture it all. We have a lot of political cartoons, not surprisingly dominated by ‘that giant orange man-baby’ from across the pond, and there’s a tribute to the legendary Jules Feiffer. Mark Winter concludes his three S’s series with a thank you to Gerald Scarfe and his work, and there’s a brilliant look at nibs from Marshall Not Funny. We also get a glimpse of the cartoonist’s life abroad with the always entertaining Andrew Birch in Spain. There’s also cartoons galore in the form ofa centre-spread special on something we’d all love a bit more of– Growth – (a mix of gardening /Rachel in accounts gags), and Spring. Dy meets up with budding cartoonist Ellery Mitchell, and the most accurate soothsayer in Greater London, Prophetical Mildred, returns with your horoscopes. Finally, a parting shot from just off the A327, and an unexpected final destination.
