Glenn Marshall writes (about himself again):

Caricaturist extraordinaire Simon Ellinas and I helped out at the launch of the new book store at the back of the North London Hospice large shop in Barnet on Friday.

The event was the brain child of Prof. Neil Martin who some of you will know is a regular attender of our PCO events and indeed a buyer of cartoons. Neil also corralled a large amount of authors to donate signed books for a raffle.

The books included work by:

David Quantick (Thick Of It, VEEP, TV Burp),

Joel Morris, TV comedy writer (Cunk, Mitchell & Webb, Viz)

Adam MacQueen from Private Eye

Nick Jones, former BBC Industry Correspondent who wrote a great book last year on political cartoons during the miners’ strike (featured in a previous blog post)

Plus Neil gave several of his own tomes including his excellent ‘Psychology of Comedy’.

The ‘Sweet Europe’ catalogue for an exhibition of PCO and Greek cartoons in Athens and ‘The Great British Colouring Book’  donated for the raffle.

The PCO kindly supported the event by providing artistic materials and donating two books featuring members’ cartoons for the raffle. We also plan putting on a small exhibition of book-related cartoons in the shop using submissions to our previous traveling ‘Bookmarks’ shows (we will of course ask for permission from individual cartoonists to use their drawings)

I’d drawn life-size characters from fiction to feature in the window where I also did some live painting…..it felt like a one-man Herne Bay Cartoon Festival.

This was all put together to a very tight schedule (two weeks). When we do it again it would be great to get more cartoonists along.

I hope my involvement will ensure that when I reach my final days the hospice will provide me with an executive VIP suite!

Thanks to all the staff at the store for making us so welcome. Particular thanks to Paul Hurst who set up the window ‘stage’ and cut out all the cardboard characters.

If you’d like to make a donation to the hospice you can here.
