Alex Hallatt

Alex Hallatt is a British-Kiwi cartoonist and writer who creates comics and books about various topics, including environmental issues, travel, and reasons to be cheerful. She is best known for her syndicated comic strip, Arctic Circle, which features a group of immigrant penguins and other animals living in the Arctic and dealing with the challenges of climate change, consumerism, and robots who want to take over the world.

She was born in Bristol, England, and has a degree in biochemistry from the University of Kent at Canterbury. Alex started her career as a professional cartoonist in 1999, working as the staff cartoonist for Brighton’s daily newspaper until she emigrated to New Zealand in 2003. Her science comic for kids, Jack and Joni and the Time-Travelling Shed, appears in CSIRO’s Double Helix magazine in Australia. She also independently publishes books, such as A Basque Diary, an illustrated account of her two years of living in Hondarribia, Spain; Hoover the Hungry Dog, a children’s book about a greedy yellow dog; and FAB (Friends Against Bullying) Club, a middle grade book series about a group of kids who stand up to bullies.
